Q and A "Raiders of the Lost Puigs"

Many have asked what the Scavenger Hunt will entail. This Scavenger Hunt will be much different from all past hunts. Here are some answers to commonly asked questions:

Q. When is the Scavenger Hunt?
A. Saturday, May 2, 2015

Q. Must I RSVP?
A. Yes. An email will be sent out in when it’s time to commit to an RSVP.

Q. Where does the Hunt begin?
A. TBD

Q. Does it cost money to play the HUNT?
A. No. However, the Organizers are asking each person who wishes to be present for dinner at the “Finish Line Party to contribute $12.00 per person towards catering. This would be greatly appreciated to help offset the cost of feeding every team player and Hunt Helpers. We simply cannot do it on our own. Thank you for your help and understanding. Nacer Thomas is the Facilitator of the “Finish Line Party” and will be collecting money for the food.

Q. How do I contribute $12 for catering?
A. In March there will be a link on the Scavenger Hunt website where you can send $12 via Paypal. You can also simply hand it to Nacer or us before the HUNT if you prefer.

Q. What type of food will be catered?
A. This is to be researched and determined. It will be dinner and beverages. Once the catering is confirmed (head count and $$ contributed) you will be notified of what will be served.

Q. Who is invited?
A. We always try to include as many as possible within reason. This HUNT is mainly for those who have not been able to participate in previous hunts. Those who are invited have received an email invitation. If you have received an email directing you to this site, you are invited. Though we wish we could, we cannot include everyone.

Q. Is the HUNT difficult and strenuous?
A. Yes. It is a day of driving, running around, and constant on the move action with time sensitive deadlines. Think of it as a race of time, speed and wits. Challenges and puzzles are planned with adults in mind.

Q. How long will the HUNT last?
A. 3-4 hours.

Q. Can kids/teens play?
A. If you have children in your family it’s up to you if you want to take them along. Since the HUNT is complex and created with only adults in mind, kids/ teens will find it difficult to contribute to the success of their team. If you decide to bring your child they will be on your team and ride in your car. Before forming a team, please be certain to discuss this with others on your team to make sure that everyone is in agreement.

Q. Who will be on my team?
A. You will be able to select your own team with a minimum of 3 people and up to 4 people. Having 3 people on your team will increase your difficulty level. A guest list will be published on the website so that you can start selecting your team and developing strategies.

Q. Who is going to be the driver?
A. Your team will decide who the driver will be and which Team Member’s car to use. The driver has the largest responsibility. The driver must be as careful as possible and put safety first.

Q. Should I give gas money to the driver?
A. Yes. Please plan on giving the driver $5.00 per person to contribute towards gasoline.

Q. What will I need the day of the HUNT?
A. You should plan on bringing a GPS, internet equipped smart phone or ipad, snacks, water and $5.00 per person for gas for the driver.

Q. Will there be a prize for 1st place?
A. TBD.

Q. Where will the HUNT take place?
A. In various parts of Los Angeles and Orange County.

Q. I don’t know those counties well, will I have a disadvantage?
A. No. Just use your GPS and internet and you should be fine. The last three Hunts 1st place winners were from out of state. Stop whining already.

Q. If I show up late at the Starting Line can I meet up with my team later?
A. The Hunt waits for no one. If you are late and the HUNT starts it’s up to your team if they want to coordinate a meet-up place. Don’t be late!

Q. Do you need help the day of the Scavenger Race?
A. Yes. I will need 10 volunteers to be Helpers on the day of the hunt. Helpers will be stationed at various points in the HUNT and will rendezvous directly with Teams during the HUNT. However, Helpers do not play the Hunt.  If you’d like to be a part of the day’s activities without all the running around this is a good option. Please contact me if you’d like to be a Helper.

Q. What if I get caught cheating?
A. You will be pelted with water balloons and made to wear a dunce cap that says “cheater”. Sadly, we’ve had cheaters in the past and it is disheartening to us. The HUNT is meant to be a fun day for all to enjoy. There is no gold medal. There is no reason to cheat.

Select Your Team - "Choose Wisely".

It is time for you to begin forming your team. Your team should be made up of 3-4 people. You will work closely with your team before the Hunt ever begins. Once you have selected your team please send an email to me with the name of your team and your team members. Your team name should be related to the theme of the hunt or the time period. The deadline to submit your team name and team members is February 7, 2015.

The Date and Theme Are Revealed

Here is your first task. The date of the Scavenger Hunt will not be given. Rather, you must decipher the date: "mense maio,", 2015. If you find having to decipher the date vexing, this Scavenger Hunt is not your cup of tea.

In this Scavenger Hunt you will be playing the role of students in Dr. Jones’ Archeology class.  Dr. Jones, and his internationally acclaimed colleagues, Dr. Thomas, and Dr. Puig along with their Assistant, Parlene, are on the verge of an unprecedented archeological discovery. But as we well know, nothing is that simple. “X never marks the spot”.

The curriculum will include the study of ancient languages, science, mathematics, and archeological artifacts. Your team will have a class project taking you on a journey of discovery, research, artifact processing, and analysis. That is, if things go smoothly for your team.

Archaeologists study past cultures through artifacts, or items which people have made, used or modified. Further, they investigate sites and artifacts to answer a specific research question or to save cultural resources from destruction. Archaeologists strive to examine and preserve the finite and fragile clues of former cultures in order for us to understand our link to the past.

The hunt will be a medley of conundrums referencing both “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “The Last Crusade”. Both movies are set in the 1930s-1940’s. As such, everyone will be dressed in the styles of these time periods. There will be an additional 50 points awarded to the team the day of the hunt with the best period look.  If you have questions about what these styles look like, Google “ 1930’s College Students”  OR  “1940’s College Students”.

“And in this sort of race, there's no silver medal for finishing second.” - Professor Henry Jones Sr. ~ The Last Crusade.
